Fires in Greece-2018
July 30, 2018
Last week we closely followed news reports regarding the devastating wildfires which broke out in Greece. Our hearts are deeply saddened as we have read numerous accounts of people fleeing for their lives; the pictures we have seen are quite sobering. Many were trapped in their homes and automobiles by the intense fires that were swept along by gusts of wind up to 80 mph. Others ran to the sea to escape the flames; those who made it to the sea waited many hours in smoke laden conditions for coast guard and private boats to rescue them. The current death count is 91 with 25 still missing and over 172 people injured. The village of Mati, a popular holiday resort about 19 miles east of Athens, is almost completely destroyed.
Please pray for the MTW teams in Athens and our national Greek partners as we seek to provide the most effective assistance to families who have lost loved ones and homes, both within the network of our churches as well as local residents. MTW has established a disaster relief fund as we continue to access critical needs. If you would like to donate to this fund, please click on the link below. A team from MTW's Global Disaster Response will arrive next week to give us valuable insight in helping us assess the current situation, particularly from a trauma care perspective, as we on the field work with an aid committee from the Greek Evangelical Church to provide assistance.
Thank you for your prayers for the people of Greece and for us as this struggling country faces another crisis. Pray that Christ would be honored and glorified through our serving as His church seeks to be His hands and feet and heart of compassion in the midst of this tragic event.
In prayer for the people of Greece,
Phillip and Kay Luther
