REFLECTIONS

“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

- St. Augustine

“My brethren, the reason why you have not got contentment in the things of the world is not because you have not got enough of them.  That is not the reason. But the reason is because they are not things proportionable to that immortal soul of yours that is capable of God himself.  Many men think that when they are troubled and have not got contentment, it is because they have but a little in the world, and if they had more then they would be content.  That is just as if a man were hungry, and to satisfy his craving stomach he should gape and hold open his mouth to take in the wind, and then should think that the reason why he is not satisfied is because he has not got enough of the wind.  No, the reason is because the thing is not suitable to a craving stomach.” - Jeremiah Burroughs

PRELUDE

PREPARATION

PRAISE

HYMN OF PRAISE  Almighty God

CALL TO WORSHIP  Psalm 113

Leader: Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD!

Congregation: Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised!

Leader: The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens!

All: Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD!

RENEWAL

CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Let us come to the Lord in his majesty and mercy, confessing our sins, trusting in his grace for forgiveness and his new life in us.

All: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Leader: Let us continue to confess our sins in silent prayer.

All: Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. We pray in Jesus name. AMEN

Leader: If you are trusting in Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins, hear his words of pardoning grace: And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.  - Ephesians 2:8-9

All: Thanks be to God.

HYMN OF RESPONSE  No. 455  And Can It Be

COMMITMENT

SCRIPTURE READING Philippians 4:10-20

10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. 14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
