REFLECTIONS

“Religion is not the place where the problem of man’s egotism is automatically solved. Rather it is there that the ultimate battle between human pride and God’s grace takes place. Human pride may win the battle and then religion can and does become one more instrument of human sin. But if there the self does meet God and his grace and so surrenders to something beyond its self interest then Christian faith can prove to be the needed and rare release from human self concern.”

- Langdon Gilkey, Shantung Compound

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

- John’s Gospel 4:23

DOXOLOGY

RENEWAL

CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader: Let us come to the Lord in his majesty and mercy, confessing our sins, trusting in his grace for forgiveness and his new life in us.

All: Almighty and merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you. Your name and your works are higher and greater than all we could imagine. But in the weakness of our flesh and the shallowness of our desires, we have worshiped and served things in the earth. You deserve our thoughts and expressions of gratitude and praise. But we have complained rather than give you thanks; we have flattered, praised or cursed man, rather than lifting up our hearts to you in adoration; and we have served with our lives the things we think will make us significant. Lord have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins, our rank idolatry, and our exchanging your glory for the glory of the creature and creation. It is only in Jesus Christ that we can be your worshipers. Have mercy on us, and by your Spirit unite us by faith to him that we may worship you for your glory. Amen.

PRIVATE CONFESSION OF SIN

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: If you are trusting in Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins and acceptance with God, hear this good news of his pardoning grace: Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven--for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little." And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." - Luke 7:44-50

All: Thanks be to God.
